Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
But Kya is not what they say. A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life's lessons from the land, learning the real ways of the world from the dishonest signals of fireflies. But while she has the skills to live in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world—until the unthinkable happens.
✨ My 15th read of 2025 and the 6th read of my summer challenge ✨
I don't have words to describe how much I loved this book! Although it was very different from what I usually read, I resonated with the main character very much, and it still involved plenty of intrigue, historical aspects, and a sweet romance! Through the eyes of naturalist and marsh-lover Kya in a dual timeline of the 1950s and 1960s, Where the Crawdads Sing is a profound coming-of-age story with the element of how isolation shapes one's worldview. Not only is this novel thought-provoking and unraveling, it also illustrates the beauty and importance of nature in a compelling way, while highlighting the effects of isolation on the human population and an intriguing mystery haunting the small, remote town of Barkley Cove, NC. I highly recommend this novel and believe it will become a classic piece of literature one day.
✨ Where the Crawdads Sing is a standalone novel that was a nominee for Readers' Favorite Historical Fiction in 2018. Suitable for mature young adult (16+) readers and older for brief sexual content and mild profanity. ✨
